Thanks to its privileged location, Monteverde has become one of the best places for bird watching throughout the year in Costa Rica, especially between the months of April and June, the nesting season for unique cloud forest species such as the Quetzal, which also coincides with the migration season of the famous Bellbird. There are many people who are passionate about bird watching. It is estimated that between 20% and 30% of tourists who enter the country by air do at least one bird watching activity during their stay in the country.
Monteverde has a record of almost 600 species of birds out of the 935 species that exist in the country for 2024, which represent approximately 10% of the endemic birds in the country. When we talk about endemism, we refer to a species whose geographical range is limited.
Something very important is the topography of the area that goes from 800 m.a.s.l. to 1850 m.a.s.l., which allows us to see species at different elevations that are unique to the different microclimates present in the area. Endemic animals and plants, whose vulnerability is enormous due to having smaller populations, are key to their ecosystems. (ICT/n.d.).
